Personal Tax Return Preparation in Calgary
Summit Tax & Accounting prepares personal (T1) income tax returns for individuals and families across Calgary and Alberta. We find every deduction and credit you qualify for, file electronically with the CRA, and make sure your return is in before the April 30 deadline — so you keep more of your money and avoid late-filing penalties.
Personal Tax Deadlines in Canada
The deadline to file a personal T1 tax return in Canada is April 30. If you or your spouse are self-employed, you have until June 15 to file — but any balance you owe is still due April 30.
| Obligation | Deadline (2026 tax year) | Who it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| T1 personal return filing | April 30, 2027 | Most individuals |
| Balance owing payment | April 30, 2027 | Everyone, including self-employed |
| Self-employed filing deadline | June 15, 2027 | You and your spouse or common-law partner |
| RRSP contribution deadline | March 1, 2027 | Anyone claiming a deduction for 2026 |
| Quarterly instalments | Mar 15, Jun 15, Sep 15, Dec 15 | If net tax owing is over $3,000 |
Filing late costs money. The CRA charges a late-filing penalty of 5% of your balance owing, plus 1% for every full month your return is late, up to 12 months. If you were charged the same penalty in any of the three previous years, it rises to 10% plus 2% per month for up to 20 months. Interest starts running on any unpaid balance on May 1.

Personal Tax Return FAQ
Where can I get my taxes done in Calgary?
You can file through a tax preparation chain, an independent accountant, a CPA firm, or on your own with NETFILE-certified software. Summit Tax & Accounting prepares personal returns in Calgary year-round, including returns with rental, investment or self-employment income that most walk-in services will not handle.
Can I do my own personal tax return?
Yes. Anyone can file their own T1 return using CRA-certified software, and for a single T4 with no other income it is straightforward. It is worth using a preparer when you have investments, rental property, self-employment income, a marriage or separation during the year, or several years of unfiled returns.
What is the deadline for personal tax returns in Canada?
April 30 for most individuals. If you or your spouse are self-employed, your filing deadline moves to June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30 and interest starts accruing on May 1 regardless of when you file.
How much does a personal tax return cost in Calgary?
Prices in Calgary range from under a hundred dollars for a simple return to several hundred for returns with rental property, investments or self-employment income. Ask for a fixed quote before work starts so the fee does not depend on how long it takes.
What documents do I need for my tax return?
At minimum, your T4 slips, any government slips such as T4A or T4E, investment slips, RRSP receipts, and receipts for medical expenses, donations and child care. Bring last year's Notice of Assessment as well — it shows your RRSP room and any carried-forward amounts.
What happens if I file my taxes late?
If you owe money, the CRA charges 5% of the balance plus 1% for each full month the return is late, up to 12 months, and interest on top. If you are getting a refund there is no penalty, but filing late can delay benefits such as the GST/HST credit and the Canada Child Benefit.
Can you file returns for previous years I have missed?
Yes. We routinely file several years at once. Filing voluntarily before the CRA contacts you usually produces a better outcome, and in some cases you can apply for relief from penalties and interest through the CRA's taxpayer relief provisions.
